iOS 11.2.2 Rolls Out With The Security Patch to Fix Spectre Chip Vulnerability

0

On 8 January, Apple has released the iOS 11.2.2 updated to iPhones, iPads and iPods. This is the 9th official update since the iOS 11 has been released. This update shouldn’t surprise us much, since last week there have been found a massive amount of security vulnerabilities just waiting to be exploited. We’re talking about the Meltdown and Spectre chips that had security flaws.

Apple Official Notes – Details

In the meantime, Apple has been working on fixing these flaws and sent an official note about the update: ‘iOS 11.2.2 includes security improvements to Safari and WebKit to mitigate the effects of Spectre (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715)’.

At the end of the official note, Apple took time to knowledge everyone who worked on fixing and collaborating for this update, and it’s quite a long list of names from Google Project Zero, and people at different universities or divisions. You can check the list by following the link to the official Apple support page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208401

It’s no doubt that the severity of Meltdown and Spectre flaws were the number one priority at Apple and they couldn’t have fixed it in just one week without the help of so many people. It figures that they had to mention everyone who helped patching the issues.

Keep Your Device Protected

Make sure to keep your devices protected from possible threats that might result from the Meltdown and Spectre flaws. You can do that by updating your iPhone, iPad or iPod. The device should tell you that there’s an updating waiting to be downloaded and installed. If you haven’t received the notice, you can open the device’s Settings and go to ‘General’ -> ‘Software Update’. Right after that you will have to follow the instructions provided on the screen and your iOS will update to the 11.2.2 version.

The update is 11.2.2 and not 11.2.5 because we might see some more updates until it reaches version 11.2.5. Talking about future updates, we might see a new tool that shows us battery health. When will this option come up it’s still a mystery, as there is no word about it in the beta.
